White Vinegar: The Cleaning Elixir

White Vinegar has been used for centuries in everything from soothing sunburns to pickling cucumbers. According to Wikipedia, Vinegar consists mainly of acetic acid and water. The acetic acid is produced through fermentation of ethanol by acetic acid bacteria. White vinegar is produced through a fast fermentation process that adds ‘mother of vinegar’, otherwise known as bacterial culture, to the base liquid before air is added.  Vinegar is added to many things, including cleaning products. Put down that five dollar bottle of cleaning spray that claims to cut through grease while smelling like potpourri. Why not stick to the original cleaner that will cost you a fraction of the price and doesn’t have any added chemicals?

Here are three ways you can utilize that bottle of white vinegar sitting on the shelf:

  1. Bathroom cleaner- Dilute the vinegar with warm water and dampen a sponge. Rub vigorously on bathroom tile to cut through nasty mildew and make your bathroom shine!
  2. Showerhead gunk remover- The more we use our shower, the more mineral deposits accumulate in our showerheads and cause clogs. It’s best to do this method right before you leave for the day or before bed since it takes 8 hours for the vinegar to take effect. Disconnect the shower head from the base and place it in a pot. Add enough vinegar to cover the head and heat vinegar just below boiling. Turn off the heat and let the head soak. The acid will eat away at the mineral deposits. Rinse and you’re ready for your shower!
  3. Dishwasher purifier- It’s important to cleanse your dishwasher once a month. Over time, hard water stains can begin affecting your dishes and leaving stains on your glassware. Just pour one cup of vinegar in to your empty machine and run a complete washing cycle.

There are countless other ways to use white vinegar but these are my favorite uses for my ‘cleaning elixir’. Hey, they don’t call me “The Queen Of Clean” for nothing.
