The Home-Cleaning Possibilities of Baking Soda

Many people underestimate how many products they have sitting in their kitchen or bathroom can be used for a myriad of tasks. I previously talked about the wonders of Windex and all the tasks it can complete. Now it’s time to address the under use of a very important product in the average household: Baking Soda.

Sodium bicarbonate, the chemical term for baking soda, is used in baking and cooking as ways to thicken sauces and help dough rise. Yet there is so much more to it.

Just to give you an idea of how much it can do, one article written on the subject found fifty one ways to use baking soda in every day cleaning!

I will highlight three ways you can utilize this amazing chemical compound in your home cleaning.

  1. Grease and electrical fires, cleaning ovens- When baking soda is heated, it release carbon dioxide. One of the benefits of carbon dioxide is its effectiveness in dousing fires of all kinds. It’s perfect for cleaning grease out of your oven to prevent a possible fire. Sprinkle it on the bottom of your oven, spray some water to wet it, and then wipe (or scrub if it’s a hard stain) the solution up.
  2. Silver jewelry cleaner- The gritty texture makes a great abrasive cleaner, but it’s best to add a small amount of water to the baking soda before rubbing it on your silver. If it’s too abrasive, it can wear down the silver and damage it.
  3. Cleaning carpets- remember the article I wrote on creating signature scented oils for your carpet? I suggest once a week to sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming it up. Not only does this deodorize your carpet, it also cleanses your vacuum. Do this if you have more than one oil mixture and you’re ready to switch up the scent. The baking soda deodorizes the old scent leaving it fresh and ready for the next one.

There you go! These are just a few ways to use baking soda for more than just cooking.
