Clean It Like You Mean It List: How to Eliminate the Stress of Cleaning Your Home

Here’s a scenario: Aunt Bertha and Uncle Fred from Colorado just called to say they plan to visit you in sunny Florida in one week and would you mind if they stayed with you? Of course you say yes, but now your stress level rises as you realize the short timetable you have to clean your home before they arrive. You barely have time to vacuum twice a week between working your 9-5 job and taking care of your family’s needs. Don’t fret! There’s a way to manage your chores and still have time to fit the rest of your daily activities. Create, what I like to call, the Clean It Like You Mean It list. It’s a way to figure out exactly what you need to do and how to make it happen. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. List your cleaning order in terms of importance. For instance, the most important room to clean first is the guest bedroom. Write a sub-list that states what has to be done in this room. Vacuum or sweep, change the sheets, etc. The next room would be the guest bathroom, and so on. By tackling the cleaning of the most important rooms first, you don’t have to worry if you don’t finish cleaning your whole home by the time Aunt Bertha and Uncle Fred arrive.
  2. Fit the cleaning duties into your schedule. When planning your day, set aside time for starting your cleaning list. For instance, start washing sheets when you get home before you start making dinner. Set small daily goals for yourself and spend an hour tackling one thing on your sub-list per room.
  3. Enlist help from others. Invite a friend over and have a cleaning party. Pop open a bottle of wine, order some pizza, and have her vacuum while you scrub. Put some music on to release those endorphins and make cleaning fun. If you have a family, tell your kids or husband to help you clean.
